Tokyo Tower Main Observatory is a blaze of lights for its “Milky Way Illumination” which features 10,000 blue lights. The blinking lights attached to the ceiling are thought to resemble the Milky Way, and coupled with the backdrop of the night view, the resulting scene creates an illusion of an infinite number of stars twinkling in the sky. Red lights represent Orihime (the female figure in the traditional Tanabata legend), and white lights represent Hikoboshi (the male figure). The illumination is set to run until July 12.

A japanese Police …

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

A JAPANESE police officer has been arrested for snatching the purse of a 75-year-old woman after he was chased and caught by two high school students.

Police sergeant Naofumi Nomura, 29, allegedly stole the woman’s purse with about Y10,000 ($128.68) in cash inside last night and ran off through the streets of the western city of Okayama.

Two high school students who heard the elderly woman’s screams pursued Nomura on bicycle for some 250m before overpowering him.

“I heard a woman screaming ‘thief!’ and turned around to see a man coming our way,” one of the boys, Ryutaro Hourai,15, said.

“We chased him as hard as we could. I can’t believe that a police officer who is supposed to catch criminals was caught by high school students.”

Kimiaki Hiraoka, chief inspector with Okayama’s prefectural police, said: “It was extremely deplorable. We’d like to offer our profound apologies to the victim and other people concerned.”
