Ice sculture in cold Japan

This snow and ice sculpture, which depicts the mythology of Ise Shrine in Mie Prefecture, is part of the Sapporo Snow Festival at Odori Park in Sapporo. The festival closes on Monday.

三重県の伊勢神宮の神話を描いているこの雪と氷の彫刻は、札幌の大通公園ではさっぽろ雪まつりの一環です。祭りは月曜日に閉じられます。

The humanoid HRP-4CA, center, dances on stage with human dancers in Tokyo. The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology has developed the software Choreonoid enabling a robot to make complicated moves like dancing by moving computer graphics of the robot on a display by a mouse before the action.

The new android HRP-4, left, walks beside its previous models during a press conference in Tsukuba. Its makers—Kawada Industries and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology—hope the new robot will help ease Japan’s labor shortage.

Dolphin activist Ric O’Barry walks toward the U.S. embassy in Tokyo to present a petition bearing 1.7 million signatures against dolphin hunts on Thursday. The characters on the flag read “Save the dolphins in Japan.” O’Barry, 70, who is in Japan with about 60 of his supporters to protest Taiji’s dolphin hunt, told reporters that dolphin hunting is cruel and cannot be construed as culture.
